China’s Exports Are Rising Even with Trump’s Tariffs

Even if there were trade problems with the US, China’s exports went up a lot in the first two months of this year. According to official numbers, exports went up by more over 20% in January and February, which is almost three times what experts thought they would. It puts the country on course to break the record for the biggest annual trade surplus in 2025.

The news came out just before US President Donald Trump is set to visit China in early April to meet with Xi Jinping, the Chinese president. The second-largest economy in the world relies heavily on exports because it faces significant challenges, including weak consumer spending, a shrinking population, and a housing market crisis.

Beijing usually mixes trade data from January and February to account for the distortions produced by the Lunar New Year holiday, which happens on different days each year. China’s exports increased because demand for electronics was high. Shipments of agricultural and industrial commodities also went up.

Trade with European countries expanded by 27.8%, and exports to ASEAN countries, which are a group of Southeast Asian countries that includes Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines, grew by about 30%. But Trump’s tariffs and other actions to fix trade problems between the two countries caused China’s exports to the US to drop by more than 10%.
