Around this time of year, the most renowned and honoured actors, directors, screenwriters, and members of the film business gather in the resort town of Cannes on the southeast coast of the French Riviera to attend one of the industry’s most important yearly events.
The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival kicked off on Tuesday. Major film debuts will take place throughout the festival over the course of the following 12 days, including Ari Aster’s “Eddington,” Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest,” and Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.”
A large number of A-list Hollywood celebrities were there. Among the celebrities on the red carpet during the opening event were Robert De Niro, Quentin Tarantino, and Juliette Binoche.
Although Leonardo DiCaprio did not walk the red carpet, he received a standing ovation when he gave Robert De Niro an honorary Palme d’Or. Since their collaboration began in 1993, the two have appeared on the big screen thrice.
“This Boy’s Life,” directed by Michael Caton-Jones, was the first project DiCaprio and De Niro collaborated on. A few years later, in Jerry Zaks’ “Marvin’s Room” in 1996, they worked together again. The two didn’t appear on the same screen again for over 25 years until 2023, when they reunited for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.
