Ukraine and the EU unveiled a €100 million fund on Friday to build on Ukraine’s battlefield-tested ideas and boost defence innovation. Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation, and Andrius Kubilius, the EU’s Defence Commissioner, introduced the BraveTech EU project during the fourth annual Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC) in Rome.
With each partner contributing €50 million to the initiative, BraveTech EU is the first significant tech partnership between Ukraine and Europe on equal terms. The program will target start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises in Europe and Ukraine.
During a news conference in Rome, Fedorov stated, “European colleagues will receive results from the battlefield.” He said that other European nations may possibly contribute to the initiative’s funding.
“The EU and its member states have an industrial capacity that can help Ukraine develop new defence systems and increase European resilience,” Kubilius said in a press release. Fedorov stated in a message on his Telegram profile that the initiative will be implemented in two stages, beginning with hackathons for European and Ukrainian military businesses in the autumn. The initiative will be expanded with bigger awards and investments in the most outstanding enterprises in 2026.
