Rubio Reminds Europe That Washington Needs Strong Allies Rather Than Vassals

According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the US is not requesting vassals from its European partners, but they must become less reliant on Washington. Following discussions with Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, Rubio made the comments at a joint press conference in Bratislava.

After spending the last few days at the Munich Security Conference, Rubio started his two-state trip of central Europe on Sunday, with Slovakia as the first stop. After Slovakia, where he will meet with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to discuss bilateral relations and strengthen connections with Trump allies in the region, he is scheduled to proceed to Hungary.

Both Fico and Orbán are important supporters of the Trump administration in Europe, supporting Trump’s goal of ending the war in Ukraine and Washington’s anti-immigration policies. The senior US diplomat downplayed the recent decision to withdraw a small number of troops from the continent in response to a reporter’s question. Rubio informed reporters, “We’re not leaving NATO; we might transfer a few thousand troops from one nation to another, but this has always been the case.
