There have been two instances of this in the past week. There was a telephone conversation between the presidents of Iran and Russia. As the United States and Israel persist in their attacks on Iran, Russian President Vladimir Putin is self-identifying as an international peacemaker.
The Kremlin commander, after all, was the one who authorized Russia’s comprehensive invasion of a sovereign nation that was independent in 2022. As a violation of the UN Charter, the UN General Assembly had condemned the invasion of Ukraine at that time.
Additionally, Russia is persisting in its war of attrition against Ukraine, despite its recent appeal for “a swift de-escalation and political resolution [of the Iran conflict].” Moscow has a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” agreement with Iran. Only this week, Putin reiterated the Kremlin’s “unwavering support” for Tehran. Their strategic partnership, however, is far from a mutual defense treaty.
According to the Kremlin, Putin “expressed several thoughts aimed at a swift diplomatic resolution of the Iran conflict” during his telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Monday. These thoughts were informed by his interactions with the president of Iran, leaders of Gulf states, and other nations. Russia is presented with an opportunity to enhance its visibility in the Gulf and the Middle East, as well as to establish itself as a power with influence.
