Former Canadian Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding has been arrested in Mexico after years on the run and will be extradited to the United States, according to FBI Director Kash Patel. Wedding, 44, was listed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives and is accused of leading a large international drug trafficking network.
US authorities allege Wedding ran a transnational operation that moved around 60 metric tonnes of cocaine each year across North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. Officials say the group was the biggest supplier of cocaine to Canada, generating an estimated one billion dollars annually.
Wedding is also wanted on multiple murder charges, including the killing of a federal witness. Investigators believe he ordered several other murders and engaged in witness intimidation, money laundering and drug trafficking.
Mexican officials confirmed he was detained in Mexico City, with reports suggesting Wedding voluntarily surrendered at the US embassy. Patel praised Canadian and Mexican authorities for their cooperation, calling Wedding a major criminal figure who required a joint international effort to capture.
