Efforts to block Russia’s use of the Starlink internet system to direct drone attacks on Ukraine have yielded “real results,” Ukraine’s defence minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, said on Sunday. Fedorov stated that Ukraine collaborated with Elon Musk’s SpaceX business, which owns Starlink, to take preliminary steps to counter Russian drones. He stated that the next phase involves “implementing a system that will allow only authorised terminals to operate on the territory of Ukraine.
Fedorov added, “In the coming days, we will offer instructions for Ukrainian users to register their Starlink terminals for verification. “Unverified terminals will be disabled.” Since the start of the war, Ukraine has relied on Musk’s satellite-based internet service, which is used by the military to communicate and operate drones, as well as the government, many people, businesses, and public institutions such as hospitals and schools.
Under US sanctions, Starlink cannot be sold or utilised in Russia. Analysts and Ukrainian authorities, however, have cautioned that Russia is increasingly exploring ways to use the system to its advantage, such as placing terminals on its assault drones to strike deeper into Ukrainian territory.
