In an attempt to put pressure on Israel to halt its military campaign in Gaza and advance the two-state solution, Spain invited European and Arab nations for high-level negotiations in Madrid on Sunday.
Before the 20-nation meeting, José Manuel Albares, Spain’s minister of foreign affairs, told the media, “The only interest that all of us who are gathered here today… is to stop this unjust, cruel, inhumane war by Israel in Gaza, to break the blockade of humanitarian aid, and to move definitively towards a two-state solution. Albares called Gaza a “open wound in humanity,” one that is taking lives daily, and cautioned that remaining silent is “an accomplice to this massacre.
“Spain will suggest that a significant effort to recognise the Palestinian State should take place here in Madrid today. The foreign affairs minister reiterated that he was in support of the two-state solution and not against the State of Israel.
Albares also called for the EU-Israel agreement to be suspended unless Israel stops its military campaign in Gaza, which it has intensified in an attempt to put more pressure on Hamas in defiance of international condemnation.
An almost three-month assistance blockade imposed by Israel as part of its pressure on the terrorist organisation sparked widespread worries about the serious possibility of hunger.
