Voting is Just the First Step for Thailand’s Popular Progressives

Young, idealistic, and diligent, Suttasitt “Macky” Pottasak is a typical candidate for the People’s Party of Thailand. He put up a profession in TV drama production in Bangkok to run in the last election, winning a rural seat in his native city of Nakhon Ratchasima from an old, established political family.

In recent Asian youth protests, he has taken on the hat and flag of Luffy, the protagonist of the Japanese anime series One Piece. He makes light-hearted movies about his party’s policies every day, which are gaining millions of views on social media.

Politics is something earlier generations made boring. He says, “I want to make it enjoyable. That’s why I brought in Luffy and my video mini-series. We don’t have money to buy votes. We are just average citizens, yet with a great drive to fix the long-standing problems. I believe the locals are aware of that. Opinion polls imply that much of the Thai people agrees with the People’s Party. They are polling regularly ahead of their rivals as the election on Sunday gets near.
