As Russian Strikes plunge Kyiv into Winter, Zelenskyy Urges Allies to Offer Additional Air Defense

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged Western allies to step up air defence support after a surge in Russian attacks left large parts of Kyiv without heating and electricity during freezing weather.

Speaking on Sunday, Zelenskyy said Russia launched more than 1,700 attack drones, over 1,380 guided aerial bombs, and 69 missiles in just one week. The strikes caused widespread damage to energy infrastructure, affecting hundreds of residential buildings in the capital.

This is why air defence missiles are needed every day,” Zelenskyy said as he arrived in Vilnius to attend a ceremony marking the 1863 uprising in Poland and Lithuania against tsarist Russia. He added that Ukraine continues to work closely with the United States and European partners to strengthen protection of its airspace.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that as of Sunday, 1,676 high-rise apartment buildings in the city were without heating following attacks carried out on 24 January. Sub-zero temperatures and ongoing air strikes have made repair work difficult, slowing efforts to restore essential services.
