Thai Prime Minister Says Conservatives Win Election Easily

According to preliminary vote counts, Prime Minister Anutin Charnavirakul’s ruling conservatives have a significant lead over their opponents in Thailand’s general election. Anutin claimed that his achievement belonged to “all Thais, no matter whether you voted for us or not” when his party’s predicted outcome surpassed the reformist People’s Party in surveys.

Anutin’s Bhumjaithai party was predicted to secure 194 seats in Bangkok’s 500-seat parliament with 90% of the vote counted, while the People’s Party came in second with 116. Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, the head of the People’s Party, seemed to concede the election by declaring that he was willing to serve in opposition if Anutin was able to establish a government.

After multiple coalition administrations fell and the nation had three prime ministers in a short period of time, the election was called. Anutin is now almost guaranteed to remain in power, even though no party is predicted to win an overall majority, opening the door for coalition negotiations.

This election demonstrated the unpredictability of Thai elections. For the People’s Party, which had hoped to build on its successful showing three years prior, this shocking outcome is a major letdown.
