According to the Transport Secretary, the government will lower the cost of purchasing an electric vehicle (EV) in an effort to encourage more drivers to convert. Neither Heidi Alexander nor the Department for Transport, however, would specifically confirm the Telegraph’s assertions that the government will provide drivers with credits of hundreds of pounds to lower the cost of purchasing an EV.
On Sunday, it was revealed that those without driveways will be allowed to install charging stations using “cross-pavement gullies” that would be funded by £25 million given to municipalities. While applauding the expenditure, the Conservatives said that the government was “pressuring families” to purchase “expensive electric vehicles before the nation was ready.
In an interview with Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday, Alexander stated: “Later this week, we will make some announcements about how we might lower the cost of purchasing an electric vehicle. Alexander declined to comment when asked if this will take the shape of hundreds of millions of pounds in EV grants, as some stories indicated.
We will be making the transition to electric vehicles more affordable for those who do choose to do so, I can assure your viewers,” she continued.
The Transport Department declined to comment.
