Fearing he would flee while on trial, a judge has placed former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro under curfew and ordered him to wear an ankle tag. He is charged with organizing a coup to stop President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from assuming office in January 2023. He led Brazil from 2019 to 2022. He denies any misconduct.
It comes after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose high taxes on Brazilian goods in an effort to end the investigation, which he has referred to as a “witch hunt.” Supreme humiliation” is how Bolsonaro described the court limits, adding that he had never thought of leaving Brazil.
On directives from the Supreme Court, police searched his residence and political headquarters on Friday. Judge Alexandre de Moraes further mandated that Bolsonaro be prohibited from using social media and from corresponding with foreign ambassadors, diplomats, or embassies, as well as his son, Eduardo Bolsonaro, who has been advocating for him in the United States.
The former president will be subject to round-the-clock monitoring and need to observe a curfew at night. To impose penalties on Brazilian public authorities, Judge Moraes claimed that Bolsonaro and his son, Eduardo, were acting willfully and unlawfully.
