According to sources who spoke to Euronews, Dubravka Šuica, the European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, will visit Washington later this week to attend the first official meeting of US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace.
Despite most EU nations declining formal participation and the European Commission’s legal reservations about the board’s charter and governance, the step indicates that Brussels is not ready to completely write off collaboration with the Trump-chaired board.
Later on Monday, a representative for the European Commission stated that Šuica would only take part in the “specific part” of the meeting “dedicated to Gaza.” She also mentioned that her participation aligns with the EU’s “long-standing commitment to support the ceasefire” and global initiatives to “support the reconstruction and post-war recovery” of the region.
The Bulgarian diplomat Nickolay Mladenov, appointed by Trump as the High Representative for Gaza and responsible for connecting the Board of Peace with a technocratic Palestinian committee that oversees its daily operations, will join foreign affairs ministers in Brussels next week to discuss the matter.
