The European Commission said Monday that more than 20 firefighting aerial vehicles and hundreds of firemen from all around Europe will be pre-positioned in high-risk areas for wildfires throughout the union this summer.
In July and August, about 650 firemen from 14 European nations will be sent to strategic high-risk areas in France, Greece, Portugal, and Spain. This is the largest number of pre-positioning firemen throughout the EU since the start of pre-positioning in 2022. Austria, Bulgaria, Czechia, France, Moldova, and Romania will send teams to Greece, receiving half of those European firefighters.
With four medium amphibious aircraft apiece, France and Greece will receive the largest share of the EU-supported summer fleet, which will be organised and funded under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. France will have a single helicopter as well.
Other nations getting the summer fleet include Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, and Italy. EU support is tangible and makes a difference on the ground,” stated EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness, and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib.
“Sadly, flames and extreme temperatures have taken on a new normal in Europe. “I am happy that the EU is offering more than just words of consolation and concern,” she continued.
