In reaction to limitations the Mexican government set on passenger and freight flights into Mexico City some years ago, the Trump administration threatened to terminate a long-standing cooperation between Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico and slapped additional restrictions on flights leaving Mexico on Saturday.
Mexico’s forced relocation of airlines from the main Benito Juarez International Airport to the newer Felipe Angeles International Airport, which is 50 kilometers away, violated a trade agreement between the two countries and gave domestic airlines an unfair advantage, according to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
Referring to the former president and his transportation secretary, Duffy stated, “Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg purposefully permitted Mexico to violate our bilateral aviation agreement.” “Today is the last day of it. Let these steps be a message to any nation that believes it can exploit the United States, our carriers, and our market. America First entails defending the core value of justice.
With almost 40 million flights there last year, Mexico is the most popular international destination for Americans. Until Duffy is pleased with Mexico’s treatment of US airlines, all Mexican passenger, cargo, and charter airlines will now have to submit their schedules to the Transportation Department and get government clearance of their flights.
