On March 8, hundreds of thousands of women marched in cities across the globe to commemorate International Women’s Day. Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in Madrid’s streets in support of women’s rights and a feminist, anti-racist agenda.
Participants braved the rain to chant against racism and gender inequality during the march organized by the feminist network 8M Commission. Although organizers said the number was closer to 80,000, the Spanish government registered 25,000 participation, compared to 20,000 in 2024.
Closing the gender gap and combating gender violence were the main goals of the protest in Rome. Italians were demonstrating in 60 towns throughout the nation to draw attention to violence against women, but the city staged the biggest rally in Italy. The protest’s catchphrase, “Not One Less,” underscored the continuous struggle against gender-based violence and femicide.
Thousands more demonstrated against gender abuse and the increasing pressure on women in society in Istanbul, Turkey. Speeches, music, and dance were all part of the event in Istanbul’s Kadikoy neighborhood, celebrating women’s strengths while emphasizing the pressing need for social reform. However, the protest was strictly regulated by a large police presence, which included water cannon vehicles and officers in riot gear.
