Due to India’s import of Russian crude oil, US President Donald Trump declared in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday that he intends to apply an extra import tax and a 25% tariff on Indian goods. Remember, although India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high, among the most expensive in the world,” stated the post.
Then he criticized what he called “strenuous and obnoxious” trade obstacles in India. According to the Times of India, India imports over 35% of its crude oil from Russia, with imports peaking in June of this year for the second time in two years. Because of the escalating full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the United States has placed restrictions on Russian oil producers and ships.
India is Russia’s biggest energy consumer and purchases “a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia,” according to Trump, at a time when “everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine.
Therefore, as part of the administration’s implementation of updated tariffs on certain nations, he plans to impose an extra, as-yet-unspecified “penalty” beginning on Friday. Since India and Russia are close, New Delhi has opposed Western sanctions against Moscow because of its war in Ukraine.
