In a Close Election in Honduras, a Candidate Supported by Trump Prevails

Following weeks of delays due to technological issues and claims of fraud, Nasry Asfura has been proclaimed the victor of Honduras’ presidential election. According to the National Electoral Council (CNE), Salvador Nasralla of the center-right Liberal Party received 39.5% of the vote. In contrast, the conservative National Party candidate, supported by US President Donald Trump, received 40.3%.

Honduras: I am ready to govern,” Asfura wrote in a post on X. I promise not to disappoint you. All sides were asked to accept the outcome “so that Honduran authorities may ensure a peaceful transition of authority” by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

However, the outcome was deemed “completely illegal” by Luis Redondo, the president of the nation’s Congress. Technical issues caused two delays in the vote count, which electoral officials deemed “inexcusable” on November 30.

Ana Paola Hall, president of the CNE, attributed the delay to the commercial business responsible for tabulating the findings. She claimed that the company had performed repairs without consulting the CNE or giving prior notice.
