Trump Claims he Will Meet with Putin in Hungary in An Attempt to End the Conflict in Ukraine

Although a date has not yet been set, US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary in an attempt to end the conflict in Ukraine. Trump discussed Ukraine’s demand for long-range missiles with Putin over the phone on Thursday.

The contact was made in advance of Trump’s Friday White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has been urging the US president to supply Kyiv Tomahawk missiles, which would enable Ukrainian forces to launch attacks farther into Russian territory. Zelenskyy has maintained that such strikes would force Putin to pay greater attention to Trump’s demands for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine to settle the conflict.

Additionally, he is indicating that if Putin does not return to the table quickly, he is prepared to increase pressure on him. About the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Trump said, “Interestingly we made progress today, because of what’s happened in the Middle East,” during a dinner for supporters of his White House ballroom project on Wednesday night.

Earlier this week, Trump told Israel’s Knesset in Jerusalem that the truce in Gaza will create the framework for the United States to assist Israel in normalizing relations with many of its neighbors in the Middle East.
