As part of attempts to create a truce, reopen borders into the Israeli-blockaded area, and begin relief deliveries, Hamas said on Sunday that it will free Edan Alexander, the only American hostage still alive in Gaza.
Late on Sunday, US President Donald Trump posted on social media to indicate that Hamas had decided to free Alexander, calling it “a step taken in good faith towards the United States.” Trump’s trip to the Middle East this week coincides with the news of the first captive release since Israel broke a truce in March.
It also implies that the United States, Israel’s closest friend, is prepared to support attempts to end the conflict, which has been going on for 19 months, through ceasefire negotiations. As part of a regional trip, Trump, whose government has expressed complete support for Israel’s actions, is scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this week.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office in Israel acknowledged the move, stating that the US notified them of Hamas’ intention to free Alexander “without compensation or conditions” and that the action is anticipated to trigger ceasefire talks. Washington’s direct negotiations with Hamas earlier last year infuriated the Netanyahu administration.
