Trump Claims that Modi has Consented to Stop Purchasing Russian Oil

In an attempt to exert economic pressure on the Kremlin as part of efforts to end the war in Ukraine, President Donald Trump has stated that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to cease purchasing Russian oil.

Trump called it “a big stop” and told reporters that Modi had promised to terminate India’s acquisitions “within a short period of time. An Indian embassy spokesperson in Washington, DC, declined to comment. A diplomatic breach has resulted from New Delhi’s resistance to the US president’s attempts to use India’s purchases of Russian oil as leverage in his trade war.

Russia’s top exports are gas and oil, and its top clients are Turkey, China, and India. I need to persuade China to follow suit,” Trump stated in the White House on Wednesday.

As part of a larger effort to cut off Moscow’s energy funding, his administration is also pressuring Beijing and other trading partners to cease purchasing oil from Russia. Trump stated that the changeover would be “a little bit of a process, but the process is going to be over with soon” and that India could not “immediately” stop oil imports.
