Donald Trump says the United States and Iran will have “direct talks” on Saturday about a potential nuclear agreement. Iran’s foreign minister also confirmed the meeting, describing it as “as much an opportunity as it is a test.
The US president said Monday that talks between Washington and Tehran would be at a “very high level” and that if an agreement was not achieved, it would be a “very bad day for Iran.” Trump threatened military action against Iran last month after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s top leader, openly rejected the offer of direct negotiations.
Following a White House meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, who has also previously suggested bombing Iran to prevent it from obtaining nuclear weapons, Trump revealed the discussions.
We have a massive meeting on Saturday [with Iran], and we’re dealing with them directly,” Trump stated while speaking in the Oval Office. Additionally, it would be fantastic if a settlement could be reached.
Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and if the talks aren’t successful, I actually think it’ll be a very bad day for Iran,” Trump subsequently stated, implying that Iran would be in “great danger” if the negotiations failed.
