As he pushes for an end to the crisis in Ukraine, President Donald Trump announced that his foreign ambassador, Steve Witkoff, will visit Russia in the coming days. At a White House event Thursday afternoon, Trump disclosed Witkoff’s hitherto unannounced trip itinerary. He also declared his intention to impose more penalties on Moscow and called Russia’s ongoing attacks on Kyiv “disgusting.
When asked about Witkoff’s current trip to the Middle East, where he is meeting with authorities to discuss Israel’s battle in Gaza, Trump responded, “He’s going to Russia, believe it or not. More information on Witkoff’s next trip was not immediately available.
Witkoff visited President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on his most recent documented trip to Russia, which took place in April. There was no quick progress in ending the war in Ukraine as a result of the negotiations. Since then, as hope for peace dwindles, Trump’s annoyance with Putin has grown. When asked about Moscow’s most recent round of missiles and drones directed toward Ukraine on Thursday, Trump let out his frustration.
