Qatar Airways has committed to acquiring up to 210 planes from American manufacturing giant Boeing, according to US President Donald Trump. Trump announced the $96bn (£72.4bn) sale as part of his trip to the Middle East.
According to the White House, the agreement represented the largest-ever order of 787 Dreamliners, a wide-body plane used for longer trips, and would sustain 154,000 jobs in the US annually. Boeing and Qatar Airways later verified the arrangement. It is the second Boeing agreement to be revealed during Trump’s trip, and it represents a victory for the corporation as it attempts to recover from a string of production and safety problems.
Its production activities were forced to drastically slow down in January 2024 when a panel on one of its planes blew off, resulting in a loss of almost $10 billion last year.
However, the company’s stock has gained by around 20% since January, indicating heightened confidence about the company’s future. The company was also negatively impacted by a seven-week strike by some of its employees. Kelly Ortberg, the company’s boss, said investors in April that the company’s recovery strategy was “full swing” following the delivery of more than 130 aircraft in the first three months of 2011.
