The reason NATO meetings are often “pre-cooked” is to show unity. In order to prevent a confrontation with the United States, the most powerful member of NATO, Secretary General Mark Rutte has already decided on the agenda for their meeting in The Hague.
The dish that President Donald Trump wants served is a pledge from European partners to raise defence spending, and he will receive just that. However, fudge and compromise will unavoidably be introduced as ingredients.
The meeting won’t hide Trump’s disagreements with many of his European partners on trade, Russia, and the growing Middle East crisis. The president of the United States, whose motto is America First, has a negative opinion of international corporations.
Having an excellent connection with the US president, Mark Rutte has put a lot of effort into helping him win. The two-day conference will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week at the World Forum in The Hague.
According to reports, the US president’s demands have led to the summit declaration being trimmed to five paragraphs with the core discussions now lasting only three hours. Along with the leaders of over a dozen partner nations, Trump is one of 32 Western defensive alliance leaders who are travelling.
