Trump’s directive will “ensure that taxpayers are no longer on the hook for radical propaganda,” according to the White House, which referred to the 1942-founded service as “The Voice of Radical America.

The Trump administration’s attempt to shut down the US foreign broadcaster Voice of America has been blocked by a federal judge, who described the action as a “classic case of arbitrary and capricious decision making.”

After President Donald Trump ordered the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which operates Voice of America, to cut its financing two weeks ago, Judge James Paul Oetken prevented the agency from terminating more than 1,200 journalists, engineers, and other employees.

Oetken ordered a temporary restraining order that prevented the agency from closing any offices or forcing foreign workers to return to the United States, as well as from making “any further attempt to terminate, reduce-in-force, place on leave, or furlough” workers or contractors.

Following an injunction from a judge in Washington, DC, the organisation said on Thursday that it was returning cash to Radio Free Europe.

This is a decisive victory for press freedom and the First Amendment, and a sharp rebuke” to the Trump administration’s “utter disregard for the principles that define our democracy,” according to Andrew G. Celli Jr., the plaintiffs’ attorney.
