After weeks of tense discussions, the spending plan is still up in the air as the US Senate begins a protracted vote on a massive budget that is essential to President Donald Trump’s agenda. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act’s Republicans, who control both houses of Congress, disagree on how much to eliminate welfare programs in order to prolong tax incentives.
The president’s party has set a self-imposed deadline of this week’s Fourth of July public holiday, and they are racing to enact the law. The House of Representatives passed its own version of the bill last month by a single vote, so if the proposal passes the Senate, it will need to return to the House for another vote.
On Monday, senators hurried through the Capitol’s corridors, heading to the chamber floor for votes on different amendments before returning to their private conference rooms to work out their differences out of the public eye.
A procedure known as “vote-a-rama” is already underway, with senators debating whether to add changes to the roughly 1,000-page law. This discussion may last up to 20 hours. It is anticipated that the session will last till Tuesday morning.
According to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, “we’re still obviously perfecting a few things” on Monday. According to one estimate, an addition to Florida Senator Rick Scott’s recent Medicaid reduction plan could result in the loss of healthcare coverage for nearly 20 million Americans.
