In a significant blow to the Trump administration, House Republicans were unable to get their massive package of tax incentives and expenditure cutbacks approved by the Budget Committee. Unexpectedly, a few hard-right members sided with Democrats in opposing the package, demanding, among other things, more Medicaid spending cuts and the green energy tax credits from the Biden administration.
However, Democrats denounced the idea as “unconscionable,” pointing out that the wealthiest Americans would benefit from massive tax cuts. At the same time, millions of people would lose their food stamps and health insurance if it passed. They said that it would raise deficits in the future.

Before the package is brought to the entire House floor for a vote, which is still anticipated to occur early next week, the Budget panel is one of the last stops. As it aggregates the work of 11 committees that drafted different sections of the large bill, the Budget Committee’s duty is usually primarily administrative.
