In the wake of US President Donald Trump’s divisive remarks against Canada, King Charles met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump has stated time and time again that the neighboring nation should become the 51st state in the union. Additionally, he has promised to slap hefty import duties on Canada, one of the United States’ most important trading partners.

Outgoing Prime Minister Trudeau stated that he will talk about matters of national importance, such as “standing up for our sovereignty and our independence as a nation,” before to his meeting with the King at Sandringham. Trump has also been invited the King to visit him, marking a historic second state visit.

In response to Trump’s remarks, King, as head of state of the Commonwealth country, has been called upon to support Canada vocally. The former head of the Canadian province of Alberta, Jason Kenney, said Charles is walking a tightrope.

The hardline premier of Alberta, Jason Kenney, stated on X that the Canadian PM “should ask [Charles] to underscore Canadian sovereignty” before the King could take any action. During his visit to the White House last week, the conservative lawmaker then attacked British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, accusing him have “cravenly thrown Canada under the bus” by refusing to speak on Trump’s annexation threats.
