President Trump frequently receives criticism from Catholic leaders. Church leaders have condemned his extreme immigration plans, which he promised during his campaign and had fans cheering for.
For months, it has pitted the hierarchy of the Catholic Church in the United States against more conservative rank-and-file Catholics. However, the widespread reaction in the last 48 hours to Trump’s attack on Pope Leo and his distribution of an AI image of himself as a Christ-like figure has been quite different.
What’s interesting is where some of this criticism is coming from: faithful, conservative Catholic allies. They are dissatisfied not only with Trump’s public feud with Pope Leo, but also with the Iran conflict.
The outrage at Trump’s lengthy social media attack on the first American pope as too liberal and “weak on crime,” combined with the AI picture, has sparked a shift in opinion among many Catholic conservatives since the fight began six weeks ago.
