According to the US military, senior Pentagon officials have traveled to Ukraine to “discuss efforts to end the war” with Russia. Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, is scheduled to meet with the team, lead by US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, in Kyiv on Thursday following his return from a trip to Turkey.
On Wednesday, rumors started to circulate that the US and Russia had drafted a new peace agreement that included significant concessions from Ukraine. The idea has not been formally confirmed by either Moscow or Washington.
A Russian missile and drone attack on the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil earlier in the day claimed the lives of at least 26 people, according to Ukrainian officials. In 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine on a large scale.
On behalf of the administration, Secretary Driscoll and his team arrived in Kyiv this morning on a fact-finding mission to meet Ukrainian officials and discuss efforts to end the war,” Army spokesman Col. David Butler said in a statement.
Gen. Randy George, the chief of staff of the US Army, Gen. Chris Donahue, the top US Army commander in Europe, and Srg. Maj. Michael Weimer accompany Driscoll. Since President Donald Trump assumed office in January, Driscoll and Gen. George are the highest ranking US military officials to meet in the Ukrainian capital.
