Ursula von der Leyen stated during a visit to Kyiv that the European Union’s €90 billion loan for Ukraine will go “one way or another,” despite Hungary’s last-minute decision to oppose the financial program.
In reference to the agreement that the 27 EU leaders struck in December, the president of the Euroepan Commission stated on Tuesday that “this word cannot be broken. In one way or another, we will repay the loan,” she declared. “Let me be very clear, we have different options, and we will use them.”
Next to von der Leyen were Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Council President António Costa. All member states must work together to carry out any decisions made by the European Council, Costa stated.
The Soviet-era Druzhba pipeline, which was seriously damaged in a drone strike ascribed to Russia in late January, is at the center of the conflict between Kyiv and Budapest. When questioned about his government’s willingness to fix the infrastructure, Zelenskyy responded, “To remodel for what? To lose (more) individuals? This is a rather high price, in my opinion. That’s all.
