As Israel and Hamas looked to be getting closer to an accord, US President Donald Trump urged progress in ceasefire negotiations, demanding a settlement that would stop the fighting in the 20-month-long conflict.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to visit Washington in the upcoming weeks, according to an Israeli official. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss arrangements that were still in the planning stages and declined to reveal the topic of the visit.
Ron Dermer, Israel’s minister of strategic affairs, was already scheduled to visit Washington this week to discuss a truce. Health workers said that at least 60 people were killed by Israeli attacks in Gaza on Saturday, just hours before Trump’s demands for a ceasefire.
Staff at Shifa Hospital, where the victims were carried, said that the strikes, which started late Friday and lasted until Saturday morning, killed 12 individuals near Gaza City’s Palestine Stadium, which was housing displaced people, and eight more people living in flats. Eleven persons were killed in a strike on a street in eastern Gaza City at noon on Saturday; their remains were transported to Al-Ahli Hospital.
