Following the Ukrainian president’s declaration that Kyiv would not acknowledge Russian rule over Crimea, US President Donald Trump accused Volodymyr Zelensky of undermining peace talks. Trump stated that an agreement to end the war was “very close” in an article on Truth Social, but Zelensky’s unwillingness to accept US demands “will do nothing but prolong” the war.
The United States’ proposal for a compromise was previously outlined by US Vice President JD Vance, who stated that it would “freeze the territorial lines close to where they are today.” Ukraine has always maintained that it will not cede Crimea, a southern peninsula that Russia unlawfully seized in 2014.
According to Vance, Russia and Ukraine “will both have to give up some of the territory they currently own” as a result of the agreements. The government has not yet made any public statements outlining the precise geographic compromises that would need to be made.
Trump stated that he only wanted the conflict to end when questioned by White House reporters about whether the administration was seeking to acknowledge Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea. I don’t have any favourites. Favourites are not something I desire. “I’d like to close a deal,” he stated.
