Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated Monday that Ukraine will insist on a tribunal to hold war criminals accountable “even when we go to diplomacy” as Russia’s full-scale invasion approaches its fourth year.

When talking about just peace, it might be difficult to pinpoint the precise nature of this conflict. We will never forget, and we cannot forget. The Ukrainian president responded to a question from Euronews by saying, “These people will answer.” Of course, we will continue to work on (a) tribunal even after the challenging part of this battle, when we shift to diplomacy.

Speaking in Kyiv among some other international leaders who travelled to commemorate the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Zelenskyy voiced optimism that the conflict would conclude “this year. Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin spoke over the phone less than two weeks ago, and since then, Ukraine and Europe have been excluded from Washington-Moscow negotiations.

US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth’s remarks that Kyiv’s goal of joining NATO was “unrealistic” and Trump’s remarks that blamed Ukraine for the war rather than Russia have fuelled European concerns that Ukraine may be coerced into a deal that would be harmful to its security and the security of the entire continent.

A special conference on the subject is scheduled for March 6th. Concerned European leaders have met multiple times to discuss potential common positions and security guarantees they may offer Ukraine as part of a peace agreement.
