Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Wednesday that polls will not take place unless security guarantees and a truce with Russia are in place. He denied plans to organise new ballots due to US pressure. We will hold elections once all necessary security guarantees are in place. I have always stated that the subject of elections is raised by a variety of stakeholders. “Ukraine has never raised it,” Zelenskyy stated in a WhatsApp exchange with journalists on Wednesday.
But, of course, we are prepared for elections. I stated it was simple to accomplish. Make a cease-fire, and there will be elections. Security comes first, followed by politics. According to Ukraine’s constitution, conducting national elections while the country is under martial law is prohibited. Russian military are also occupying areas of Ukrainian territory, preventing voting.
If Russia agrees, it is possible to “end hostilities by summer,” Zelenskyy said.The Financial Times previously claimed that Ukraine was considering scheduling a presidential election within the next three months due to pressure from Washington.
