Following his release from Russian prison, American educator Marc Fogel was welcomed home by US President Donald Trump, who claimed that Vladimir Putin had received “not much” in exchange. Without revealing the identity of the captive, Trump declared that another would be released on Wednesday.

Late Tuesday night, Mr. Fogel, a 63-year-old former diplomat, arrived at Joint Base Andrews, which is located just outside of Washington, DC, before making his way to the White House. The Kremlin claimed Wednesday that a Russian national was being released in the United States as part of the agreement and would return home in the next few days, but it did not immediately comment.

To me he looks damned good,” Trump remarked as he stood next to Mr. Fogel at the White House. He told reporters that the release “could be a big important part” of bringing an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine and that it was a “show of good faith” on the part of the Russians.

“Russia treated us very well,” he remarked. “Actually, I hope that’s the beginning of a relationship where we can end that war and millions of people can stop being killed.” Since Russia invaded Ukraine almost three years ago, hundreds of thousands of people are thought to have died, most of them troops.
