It is remarkable to see top Russian and American officials seated around a massive negotiating table again. It would have been really difficult for a lot of people, particularly Ukrainians.
Moscow accomplished something significant in Saudi Arabia: it returned to the “top table” of international diplomacy following three years of full-scale conflict with its neighbour and isolation by the West.
Furthermore, Russia appeared to be making all the decisions. That’s precisely the picture Moscow wants to portray, even while air raid sirens continue to blare throughout Ukraine.
This was not a defeated Russia that was compelled to engage in negotiations. It resembled the US asking the aggressor to lay forth its conditions. At the beginning of the process, US officials stated that they sought to gauge Russia’s seriousness towards peace.
However, Donald Trump had already made up his mind. He declared last week that the Russian leader wants to see people stop dying after speaking with him on the phone. In response, Trump could have ordered him to remove all of his forces. Rather, as he told supporters, he wants to reach an agreement with Moscow to end the war and move on.
