A Political Upstart Could be Chosen by New Yorkers to Lead Their City and Challenge Trump

Zohran Mamdani could hardly move without his supporters stopping him as he made his way around the Upper East Side for a campaign event to welcome early voters. Two beaming young ladies told him they followed him on Instagram, looking awestruck. After thanking them, the millennial Democratic candidate for mayor posed with another young man who had his phone ready for a selfie.

Mamdani was surrounded by throngs of reporters who documented every moment of his life, including his dash into the street to shake hands with a cabbie who yelled, “We support you, man.” When New Yorkers cast their ballots on Tuesday, the 34-year-old is poised to make history with a commanding lead in the polls.

Few could have foreseen his climb from a little-known figure only months ago to a housing counselor and hip-hop musician to a New York State assemblyman and the front-runner to govern the largest city in the United States, a position that comes with a $116 billion (£88 billion) budget and international attention.

Through viral videos and outreach to content makers and podcasters, Mamdani has reached disillusioned voters at a time when trust in the Democratic party within its own members is at an all-time low.
