Trump Removes Tariffs on Numerous Food Items

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order exempting a wide range of food products, such as coffee, bananas, beef, tomatoes, avocados, and tropical fruits, from his broad tariffs. This move aims to address rising food prices that have become a political concern amid pressure following the Republican Party’s weak performance in recent elections. The administration justified the exemptions by stating that these products cannot be produced domestically in sufficient quantities to meet demand.

Trump previously insisted tariffs would not raise prices for US consumers and defended the levies as necessary to reduce the trade deficit and encourage domestic buying. However, soaring grocery costs and beef prices led him last week to call for an investigation into meat industry practices, accusing companies of collusion and price manipulation.

Although this rollback marks a shift in policy, Trump emphasized it targets products not produced in the US, claiming it offers no protection to American industries or food producers. He also conveyed that further rollback of tariffs might not be necessary, using coffee as an example where prices should soon fall following the exemption.
