The Most Significant” Modification to Refugee Regulations in Years is Announced by Britain, Creating the Longest Settlement Path in Europe

Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated on Monday that the world has become more unstable and risky, placing significant pressure on both the UK’s asylum system and its broader social contract. He emphasized that Britain continues to be a decent, compassionate, and tolerant nation but stressed that maintaining control over borders is a fundamental responsibility of the government.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, speaking to the BBC over the weekend, described the current asylum system as “out of control,” unfair, and placing great strain on communities. She highlighted the necessity of restoring order and control to maintain public support and confidence in the asylum system.

The government’s plan focuses on three main changes. The foremost is ending the automatic entitlement for refugees to settlement after five years in the UK. Instead, refugee status will now be temporary and subject to review every 2.5 years, with a wait of up to 20 years before refugees can apply for permanent settlement. This approach aims to introduce a more controlled, conditional system for granting permanent residency to address concerns about its sustainability and public trust.
