Bolsonaro was Sentenced to 27 Years in Prison for Attempting a Coup

Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court declared on Tuesday that former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro must start serving his 27-year prison term for organizing an attempted coup.

Following his conviction for organizing a coup in 2022 to remove President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the former president’s defense team decided not to pursue a final appeal. Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison after Moraes asked that the verdict be declared final, eliminating any possibility of additional appeals.

Bolsonaro was arrested on Saturday for interfering with his court-mandated ankle monitor, and he has been detained at Brazil’s Federal Police headquarters ever since. Bolsonaro will complete his sentence at the headquarters, according to Moraes on Tuesday.

Bolsonaro’s attorneys called the former president’s arrest “unjustifiable” on Saturday and asserted that his health is in jeopardy while he is incarcerated. Subsequently, the Supreme Court made public a video in which it claims Bolsonaro acknowledges using a soldering iron to tamper with his ankle monitor. He apparently claimed that he did so because he was experiencing hallucinations from new meds rather than in an effort to get out of house detention.

Following Bolsonaro’s ally, US President Donald Trump’s reelection in 2024, the US quickly started making foreign policy comments on the subject. Trump even placed high tariffs on certain Brazilian goods in July, calling on Brazil to end what he referred to as a “witch hunt” against Bolsonaro.
