China Warns Separatist Forces by Conducting Military Exercises near Taiwan

As a warning against “separatist forces,” China is conducting military exercises surrounding Taiwan that mimic the capture and blockade of the island’s strategic locations. According to the Chinese military, the army, navy, air force, and rocket force have been sent for the exercises, which involve live-fire training.

The exercises, code-named “Justice Mission 2025,” are happening just days after the US declared that it would sell Taiwan one of its biggest arms deals, valued at $11 billion (£8.2 billion). Beijing strongly objected to that action and sanctioned US defense companies as a result. Beijing, which claims the self-governing island as its own, has also been incensed by Taiwan’s efforts to bolster its defense this year.

The impending Chinese drills have drawn criticism from Taiwan’s presidential office, which describes them as a challenge to international norms. On Monday, its defense ministry reported that it had spotted 28 warships and coastguard boats, along with 89 Chinese military aircraft, in the vicinity of Taiwan.

Separately, the ministry stated that it has sent out its own forces and missile systems to keep an eye on the situation and that they are on “high alert” in order to “protect our people” and defend Taiwan.
