A Train Accident in Machu Picchu Results in one Fatality and Numerous Injuries

A head-on rail collision in Machu Picchu, Peru’s most renowned tourist destination, resulted in the death of a train driver and at least 40 injuries. According to a statement from the local authority, two trains crashed on the only track that leads to the historic Inca village on Tuesday.

Twenty ambulances were reported to have arrived at the scene, and those who were hurt were sent to hospitals in the neighboring city of Cusco. Police have not yet verified the identity of those involved in the crash, however the US embassy in Peru reported that US citizens were hurt.

The challenging terrain surrounding the crash site has “hampered” the evacuation of “hundreds” of tourists who are still at the scene, according to local media outlet Peru21. According to a health official who spoke to Reuters, at least 20 of the injured are in critical condition.

The closest settlement to Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes, and Ollantaytambo Station were connected by a track when the collision happened. It typically takes ninety minutes to go between the two stations. PeruRail and Inca Rail, respectively, operated the two trains that were involved in the collision.
