Eight persons were killed when the US military attacked five suspected drug-smuggling vessels over the course of two days, while others may have survived by jumping overboard, according to a social media statement made by US Southern Command on Thursday.
The locations of the attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday were not made public by US Southern Command, which is in charge of South America. The eastern Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea have also seen similar assaults.
Three boats are seen moving in an unusual close configuration in a video of Tuesday’s attack that Southern Command shared on social media. According to the military, the boats were in a convoy following recognized narco-trafficking routes and “had transferred narcotics between the three vessels prior to the strikes. According to the military, three persons were killed when the first boat was hit, but the occupants of the other two boats escaped the strike by jumping overboard.
According to Southern Command, it promptly alerted the US Coast Guard to begin search-and-rescue operations. The statement from Southern Command did not specify if the people who sprang from the boats were saved.
The US military came under intense criticism after its forces murdered the survivors of an attack in early September with a follow-up strike to their immobilized boat, which is why calling in the Coast Guard is noteworthy.
