In a joint statement released on Sunday, the leaders of Spain, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Uruguay condemned the US military operation that resulted in the overthrow of dictator Nicolás Maduro and cautioned against stealing the nation’s abundant natural resources after the US declared it would take control of Venezuela in the interim.
The six signatories, including Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, claimed that the US military operation violated “basic principles of international law, in particular the prohibition of the use of force and respect for territorial sovereignty established in the United Nations Charter.”
These acts constitute an unacceptable precedent for peace, regional security and pose a risk to the civil population,” said the joint statement. “We reiterate that the circumstances in Venezuela must be addressed exclusively through dialogue and in accordance with the will of the Venezuelan people, without intervention and according to international law.
Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were apprehended by the US Delta Force on Saturday during a stunning raid on his guarded residence in Caracas. Currently incarcerated in a New York prison, Maduro is accused of drug trafficking, narcoterrorism, conspiracy to smuggle drugs into the United States, and machine gun possession.
