As Travel Chaos Worsens, the US House Will Vote on DHS Funding

Airport travel delays around the nation have prompted the US House of Representatives to return to the Capitol to vote on a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Hours after Republicans rejected a Senate-passed agreement to finance the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the vote would fund DHS, including its immigration agencies, through May 22.

The standoff in Congress has prevented TSA officers, who oversee security in US airports, from receiving their salaries for almost a month. There have been lengthy delays at numerous airports. Democrats have pushed to stop funding DHS-covered immigration agencies without revisions, thus the House bill is unlikely to become law.

The legislation will be put to a vote by the House late on Friday. It would then go to the Senate for approval if it is passed, but Democrats there have already said they will not support it. Funding for the DHS, which includes TSA agents, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, doesn’t seem likely to pass anytime soon because Congress is scheduled to take a two-week vacation.

As the deadlock persisted, President Donald Trump issued an order compelling his department to compensate hundreds of airport security guards, many of whom had been working for free, reporting absenteeism, or quitting.
