After Returning from a Ship Infected With the Hantavirus, a French National Exhibits Symptoms

According to the prime minister of France, a passenger on a cruise ship that experienced a hantavirus outbreak displayed signs of the illness while being returned home. According to Sébastien Lecornu, all five of the people evacuated from the MV Hondius were “immediately placed in strict isolation until further notice” after the French national experienced symptoms during a chartered trip from Tenerife to Paris.

The Dutch ship anchored off the Canary Islands before daybreak on Sunday, and over 90 tourists, including the French nationals, will be taken home. After traveling aboard the ship, three individuals passed away; two of them were found to have contracted the virus. Officials in personal protective equipment (PPE) were spotted greeting the French plane on the tarmac as it landed at Le Bourget Airport. They were subsequently transported by ambulance to the Bichat Hospital in the French capital.

According to a statement from France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, they will be sent home to self-isolate for 45 days after being placed under quarantine for 72 hours and given a thorough evaluation. At a military hospital in the Spanish capital, fourteen Spanish nationals who were transported by plane from Tenerife to Madrid are currently under mandatory quarantine.
