Latvia has Security Questions, but There is No Magic bullet to Ban Drones, According to an Ex-Defense Minister

After a week of political unrest that resulted in the prime minister’s resignation, former Latvian defense minister Andris Sprūds told Euronews that there is no “silver bullet” for halting rogue drones and that he had been “realistic” about the limits of Latvia’s air defense.

He stated on the Europe Today program, “I have always said that it is difficult to deal with drones that have lost their trajectory. Following Latvia’s Prime Minister Evika Siliňa’s demand that he resign due to a significant security violation and the ensuing political uproar, Sprūds resigned on Sunday.

In the eastern Latgale region, close to the towns of Balvi and Ludza, near the Russian border, multiple drones crashed last Thursday after entering Latvian airspace. A small fire was started when one drone hit an oil storage facility.

Residents expressed dissatisfaction at emergency alerts arriving almost an hour after the incident, despite the fact that no citizens were hurt. Siliʻa explained Sprūds’ departure on Sunday, stating that the events “clearly demonstrated that the political leadership of the defense sector has failed to fulfil its promise of safe skies over our country.
